Default Best Necro Skills?

Hey,

I'm a relatively new Necro/Mesmer. I'd like to know what skills to go with. Right now my mains are Conjure Phantasm, Vampiric Gaze and Vile Touch. I sometimes use Deathly Swarm and Energy Tap as well.

Doesn't matter what campaigns he has, all the best Necro skills are core.

[Barbs][Mark of Pain][Enfeebling Blood (PvE)]

I noticed you're enjoying Blood Magic/degen right now - it's respectable early on in the game, but by the time you hit level 20 you should be moving on to Curses.

For builds, or ideas for builds, try PvXwiki:

I like two in particular:

Deathly Swarm - you can hit up to 3 targets with decent damage if your Death Magic rank is high (10+).

Animate Bone Horror - cheap on energy and not too long to cast means you can pile up 4, 5, 6 of them to do the fighting for you.

by far the best of the curses line right there, not to say there's not tons of other useful and good skills in curses some others too check out are [reckless haste] [rip enchantment] [rigor mortis] [insidious parasite] to name a few

with blood magic, it is fun and effective at lower levels but once you get to 20 the offensive abilities of blood magic really lose their bite. later on the most effective use of blood magic is with support/buff skills like [order of pain] [dark fury] [blood ritual]

and of course there's death magic another attribute with lots of interesting and useful skills, for Minion Mastery [blood of the master] [animate bone fiend] [death nova] are nearly staple skills.

soul reaping has some nice skills as well and you should always have an investment in this attribute so it's win win with skills like [signet of lost souls] [foul feast] [signet of sorrow]

if you get into nightfall be sure to pick up [necrosis] it's a non-elite version of [discord] that has half the restrictions to do damage, requires no attribute point investment, and does nearly as much damage at higher ranks.

sorry if you don't have all the campaigns, but I do hope we at least gave you some stuff to look for/think about

I like how nobody mentioned

[animate bone minions] or [feast of the dead].

Oh and the best necro elite for curses is [assassin's promise].

Because [animate bone minions] is certainly not an amazing necro skill.

[Assassin's Promise] is very powerful for a necromancer, but people get picky about it because it isn't a necromancer skill.

Probably two of the most powerful necromancer skills are [barbs] and [mark of pain].
Other useful ones include [Enfeebling Blood] and [Reckless Haste] (though that last one is factions).

Being able to run a solid MM build is important, so some strong MM skills are useful. [Animate Bone Horror], [Animate Bone Fiend] and perhaps [Animate Bone Minion] are always nice to have available. The most powerful MM skill in the hands of a human is probably [Order of Undeath].

Although in all honesty; if you're just starting the game, it really doesn't matter what you run so long as you're sensible. Focus in a particular line and do whatever you want, it'll probably work in early PvE.
As you get to the harder parts of the game, I strongly recommend the Curses line.

[assassin's promise], as stated and also [spiteful spirit] are probably your best options overall. They are both very solid, despite what some people might tell you. Either way, curses is definitely your best option. Leave death magic to your heroes since they do it nearly flawlessly and don't complain about long casting times.

Well, upon consideration, I think I am going to switch classes. I don't know which one to choose at this point.

The necromancer is a very powerful profession. It doesn't need to use any skills from secondaries to be a powerful force.
If you're talking about secondary professions, they're not important and can be changed almost at will.
If you're on about primary professions (and mean to reroll the character), then what did you have in mind?

I was looking at either a Ele or a Ranger

mm I can't think of anything good with either of those two professions.

i am not saying there isn't a good build, but I can't think of one.

Maybe the virulence spiker?
[glyph of immolation][virulence][steam]

but then again conditions are too easy to remove.

It's good you're thinking of trying a different class, not meaning necro is a bad choice or anything (there are no bad choices when choosing class), but it is very good experience for newer players to try different professions. I highly recommend everyone try every profession at least once; you may be surprised what you do and don't like to play as (I never thought I'd enjoy playing an assassin yet mine is now played nearly as much as my necromancer).

I have to agree with the professions and at least try every prof at least once. I have a sin and I enjoy playing him, but I find Necro's to be very flexible (dmg buffers/dealers even healers) and you can find getting into groups easier as a necro, plus I think the asian necro's from factions are hot even tho my necro is a proph necro...

As for skills getting the first major elite [Spiteful Spirit] is a good start and work on the curses line. Don't forget you're not a tank so you shouldn't be front line. [Assassin's Promise] is godly if you have a discord team there is the classic MoP Vanguard Spiker build you can find on PVX.

Another popular alternative is what you could also consider is what you could almost consider to be a ranged melee hexer.

Mark of Pain Nuker

[mark of pain][barbs][ebon vanguard assassin support][assassin's promise]["finish him!"][signet of lost souls][great dwarf weapon][blood ritual]

yeah but [deathly swarm] is crap dmg and[animate bone horror] isn't that great, use [animate bone minions]+[death nova] instead(in which case this becomes the heroes job).

Ele may look good for damage, but as you progress (and especially in HM), they cannot compete with the necromancer.
They have other uses though, they can do good support and utility and [Ether Renewal] allows them to often surpass monks.

Rangers are less useful over all, but are strong when played properly. Splinter-Barragers are popular for a reason.

I still advise a necromancer over those two.

I agree with Xeno. Nec is probably the best general PvE profession, nowadays. But that is my personal opinion

I wouldn't advise that.

OK, for right now, you're learning. You can do whatever you like, have some fun with it, and probably get better at the game for it.

Eventually, however, you'll come to understand how the game works and what is optimal and what isn't. When you reach that point, you may not be too enthused about having ele or ranger for your main character. The only top-tier role eles perform is basically a monk build; and rangers are basically wedded to daze or the barrage-pet gimmick for top-tier play, which is also pretty narrow. Necro is the class with the broadest selection of "good" builds available to it. I suggest you stick to it.
